This is a educational tool to teach students digital logic and give basic microprocessor experience.
I'm hoping it will teach me a thing or two.

I believe there was a suitcase version. This is a console configuration.
The manufacturers website can be found here:
http://cesindustries.com/ces702.htm

There are manuals that accompanied this console. Sadly I don't possess them.

Happy New Year to everyone.

A post shared by jono (@dj_jondent) on
I hope 2018 brings much good fortune.
Sitting back watching the fireworks last night reminded me of a NYE in Peru.
2011 in Arequipa.
Such a wonderful night.
I made some great friends with whom I'm friends with to this day.

Arequipa was founded on the 15 August 1540 by Garci Manuel de Carbaja. It's beautiful, filled with baroque architecture & frequently rivaled Lima for dominance. Arequipa was for a short time the capital of Peru. It has the second biggest population. Framed by 3 volcanoes, it's high in altitude (2335m above sea level) makes it a great place to acclimatise if you are planning to hike to Machu Picchu (2430m).
We did a trip to these volcanoes (Chachani, Misti and Pichu Picchu) to test for stamina. It's a good thing to do before your hike.

The city's baroque buildings are mostly constructed from sillar, a white volcanic stone.
Even our hotel was made of the stuff.

This was the entrance to our hotel

Below are some pics of the main Cathedral.
The Basilica Cathedral of Arequipa
Located in the "Plaza de Armas". It was opened in 1656.

It's style is described as Renaissance Revival architecture.

 This is the central plaza.

Everything was shut. It was the 1st Jan.2011.

Acclimatizing for Machu Picchu

Altitude sickness is probably the biggest obstacle for treking in Peru especially if you live at sea level.
In Peru most cities like Cusco are considered high altitude and the oxygen levels drop by around 5-6 percent. Symptoms range from SOB (shortness of breath) & tiredness to vomitting and dizziness.
In extreme cases, altitude sickness can cause death. Always seek medical advice if you are suffering from severe altitude sickness.

Altitude by City in Peru
  • Cusco – 3,200 meters (10,500 ft)
  • Sacred Valley* – 2,700 meters (8,850 ft)
  • Machu Picchu– 2,430 meters (7,970 ft)
  • Arequipa– 2,300 meters (7,500 ft)
  • Colca Canyon** – 3,633 meters (11,800 ft)
  • Puno / Lake Titicaca– 3,830 meters (12,560 ft)
Lima is not a good place to acclimatize for your Andean hikes as it is only 154m above sea level.
Before heading out to Cusco, I spent some time in Arequipa and visited a few of the surrounding volcanoes to help adjust.

The locals also advised me to chew Coca leaves. They make a decent tea.
Yes, coca leaves are the raw material for cocaine, but chewing the leaves or drinking coca tea when you're in Cusco (altitude 3,400 metres) clears your throbbing head and lets you breath again.

Altitude 4885m

Our bus group at 5000m. Lack of O2 took its told on everyone (except the bus driver).

Peruvian Pizza helps too.

 Inca Terraces

The bird is a Andean Condor.

Back in Arequipa. Peruvian hot dogs. I can think of no better way to round off a great few days in the mountains.

Hyve Synth

This arrived in the mail today: A Hyve synth.
I've been eagerly waiting for this since Feb 2017.
It's facinating. I think the Hyve gets its name from the upper honeycomb keyboard (and it also sounds like a swarm of buzzy oscillators.... there are 60 voices !!!).

There aren't a lot of these Hexagonal Lattice type keyboards around. (Tonnetz).
It's very Buchla Easel in its responsiveness to touch.

The Hyve is a result of a kickstarter program.
 https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/skotwiedmann/hyve-touch-synth-make-the-future-of-musical-expres
Thanks Skot for this incredible instrument. It's a beautiful fusion of engineering with art.
So how does such a small synth have this huge sound? (I'll post some videos later).
The synth looks deceptively simple. The two main ICs are a SN74HC393DR & CD40106BM96
There are six 74HC393s. It's a dual 4-bit binary counter. Each chip contains 8 flip-flops.

There are two CD40106s. These are CMOS Hex Schmitt-Trigger Inverters.
Each chip consists of six Schmitt-Trigger inputs and is capable of making 6 square/pulse wave oscillators.

The upper section has a TDA1308T/N2,115 .. it's a audio amplifier & a UA78L05CPK .... a 5V voltage regulator.
If I'm understanding this circuit correctly, each CD40106 produces 6 square waves.
As there are two CD40106 we have 12 original square waves to play with.
Each square wave is fed into a Flip-flop. The flip flop outputs 4 squares waves (each a octave below the previous).

So in actual fact each of the original square waves has added to it 4 new waves at different octaves from the original. (1 + 4 = 5)

There are two CD 40106 ICs so there are 12 original square waves.
12 X 5 = 60
This I think, is how we achieve 60 voices.

(let me know if there are any mistakes)
------------------------------
This Octave-down effect has been used in the past in guitar pedals. The MXR Blue Box used this method to create a two octave drop by using flip-flop circuits to divide the frequency by two.
This created a buzzy synthesizer like tone.

The Roland SH101 used a CMOS 4013 dual flipflop to give three sub-oscillator waveforms; square at -1 octave, square at -2 octaves, and a pulse at -2 octaves.
Roland just fed the main oscillator output to the CMOS 4013 bistable flip-flop circuit to give the sub oscillator waveforms. Simple but ingenious.

I'm exploring the Hyve's upper keyboard. This is not your familiar black white piano.
Apart from it not having any moving parts, its arranged in a lattice structure.
This is a network representing tonal space.
"first described by Leonhard Euler in 1739.Various visual representations of the Tonnetz can be used to show traditional harmonic relationships in European classical music".

I'm starting by looking at how it groups the Major Triads.
The 3 major white-white-white triads are: C Major, F Major, and G Major.
C major: C E G
 F Major : F A C
 G Major: G B D

Some initial tests of a Buchla format 227r.
This is a early rev1 that uses vactrols. It's been many years since I first purchased the PCBs but finally it's working with the help of Dave Brown and his wonderful site ModularSynthesis.
http://modularsynthesis.com/roman/buchla227/227si.htm

A post shared by jono (@dj_jondent) on
Information on this module is rather scarce.

These days music is generally played in a stereo format but the 227r is all about Quad Sound.
It's quite a wonderful module. The 4 inputs can be assigned to 4 speakers (2 front, 2 rear at the four corners of your room). This is all voltage controllable.

All the sounds are patched out via the card.
I'm considering making a breakout cable so this card doesn't have to be left plugged into the patchbay.
I'm concerned the weight of too many cables could cause damage.

Another option is a make a preconfigured patch card:
This patches my chosen outputs through the Tape1/2 & Aux1/2 at the front of the module.

The citadel dates back over 2000 years.
The name "Tower of David" was coined by Byzantine Christians who believed the site to be the palace of King David.

I dug this out of storage today with the intention of selling it.
I haven't used it in years.

This original Bass Station came out in 1992.

It has that cheap black plastic look but I think it still sounds great.

Not too shabby in the TB 0303 emulation department.

Reckon I might just keep this one.

Some snippets of last night.

The original pig that was floated above Battersea Power Station was called "Algie".
It was designed by Roger Waters in 1976.

 Qudos Bank Arena.

This is from Roger Waters' Us and Them Tour.
... incredible performance. The light and sound show was nothing short of spectacular.

The Battersea Power Station plays a big role in the concert.

Its image was projected onto screens that were supported by suspended scaffolding which was lowered
above the audience .. complete with smoking chimneys.
The original coal fired station was built in the 1930s and was included on the cover art of Pink Floyd's 1977 album Animals and its appearance in the 1965 Beatles' film Help!
It is one of the largest brick buildings in the world.

In 1965, Waters co-founded the progressive rock band Pink Floyd with drummer Nick Mason, keyboardist Richard Wright, and guitarist, singer, and songwriter Syd Barrett.

Waters is certainly not a fan of Trump. Lot's of images of Trump.....vomiting, driving a toy car, as a  naked man, etc .

His face appeared on a giant helium filled drone pig that floated around the room.

“Please help we are trapped in a dystopian nightmare”

The first half of the show was full of images of drone warfare and the refugee crisis.
Waters hasn't stopped his fight against injustice.

The end was brillant. The pyramid visuals were something I will always remember. The audience gave a standing ovation. Waters was visibly moved & emotional from it all. Thanks Roger.

These are my build notes for the Nonlinearcircuits eurorack Divide & conquer module.
Obviously this is a clock divider.
4 different dividers:
1. /2, /4, /8, /16, /32, /64, /128, /256
2. /1.5, /3
3. /2.5, /5
4. /3.5, /7
Its super flexible as you can patch outputs into inputs to get crazy divisions.
The CMOS chips you will need are: 4013, 4024, 4070.
They are all SOIC format.

I don't have any 4013s so I've ordered these:

La Paz - Bolivia - The Cholas of Bolivia

Some pics of La Paz in Bolivia.
La Paz, in Bolivia, is the highest administrative capital in the world, resting on the Andes’ Altiplano plateau at more than 3,500m above sea level.
It's a crazy city... jostling pedestrians, honking, diesel-spewing minivans
.
Full of ladies wearing bowler hats.  Whats with the hats.???
The first thing that will strike you when you visit Bolivia are these bowler hats. They are everywhere, and most of the women wear them.

It seems that this fashion started in the 19th century. The story is that the Manchester manufacturers first tried to export the hats to British railway workers in Bolivia but when this failed they turned their attention to the local women, saying that all the fashionable women in Europe were going around wearing these bowler hats.

“Legend” has it that those who were wearing the hats did not have problems with infertility. So it became vastly popular among the women from the Aymara indigenous group.

La Paz also named Chuqi Yapu (Chuquiago) in Aymara, is the seat of government and the de facto national capital of the Plurinational State of Bolivia. With an estimated 789,541 residents as of 2015, La Paz is the third-most populous city in Bolivia

ARSEq - NLC - Build notes

These are my build notes for the ARSEq. It's a Nonlinearcircuits module in Eurorack format.
ARSEq ( =Attack Release SEquencer). Its a hybrid sequencer and AR envelope generator.

The thing that makes this special and unique is that the envelope needs 2 clock signals to work.. one to start the attack and the next to start the release.
There are 4 clocked envelopes.

NLC words of wisdom.

--------------------
When installing the pots, you will need to decide how snappy you want the envelopes to be,
Andrew suggests the best setup is
100k pots for Attack and 1MA pots for Release.
The 100K pots are type B, linear taper.

So I'll do this.

Triple Sloth - 8hp version - NLC Build notes

These are my build notes for the nonlinear circuits 8 hp Triple Sloth.
It's a module in Eurorack format that contains 3 chaos circuits.

It's a evolution of the original 4hp Sloth module which I built in 2015.
It was called the supersloth back then. You could build different versions of this module basically by changing some capacitors.
Andrew later came up with a 12HP version. This had 3 types of sloth chaos.
It was actually three of the supersloth modules mounted behind one 12HP panel.
Notice the different size electrolytic caps in each PCB

The new 2017 Sloth module comprises two PCBs.

Sat arvo Jam - 10th Jan 2017

A great way to spend a Sat arvo with Paul (aka Cobramatic) ,
Messing around with some euro mainly today.   ....and a video synth and a the Makenoise 0-coast.

Paul showed me some great new modules .. two by Intellijel... the Rain maker & Plonk.
These are both digital.

A post shared by jono (@dj_jondent) on
The Rainmaker.... it a deep complex digital sound processor that can create resonant sounds that go into the "pseudo physical modelling territory". loads of precets.
Its much more than just a delay.
It has 16 taps, each with has its own resonant filter (LP/BP/HP) and granular pitch shifter.
In addition to being able to save the type of filter at each step, you can set resonance & cutoff frequency.
They can even self oscillate . The pitch shifter has a range of +15 semitones to -16 semitones.

A post shared by jono (@dj_jondent) on
Plonk.
You can probably view this as a drum module that specialises in making percussive sounds... natural and unnatural. I've never really been into digital, but i was impressed with this one. i´m absolutely in no doubt that the Plonk will pair VERY well with a Rings.
The Plonk definitely emits very realistic sounds of the mediums it tries to emulate but it's capable of some very alien sounds too!

It's not a samplier, it uses physical modelling. A microprocessor calculates the type of sound that is produced ...depending on the characteristics of the membrane (called the resonator) and the percussion device (the exciter).

So its uses mathematical modelling.
Plonk offers several types of resonators: beam; marimba; drumhead; membrane; plate; and string.
There are 2 types of percussion devices: a mallet and a noise source.

There are 128 user preset slots with import/export via USB. These come filled with factory presets designed by Richard Devine and AAS.

 --------------------

The video synth I tested yesterday ia the new Vidiot by LZX.
It arrived only Friday so I did the big unboxing yesterday.

Here are some quick videos to show you what we came up with in just one arvo.
Lots of variation. I think its a great synth and a good way to begin your journey if you are new to video synths.
Even if you have a big LZX system, I think this is still useful as its size makes it perfect for live gigs.

Tiwanaku - Bolivia

This is a Pre-Columbian archaeological site in western Bolivia.
It was discovered in 1549 by Spanish conquistador Pedro Cieza de León.
It's near Lake Titicata.

The Gate of the Sun. This megalithic solid stone arch is constructed from a single piece of stone. The weight is estimated to be 10 tons. The inscriptions found on the object are mysterious. They are believed to be either of astronomical and/or astrological significance.
The Gateway is 2.8 metres high and 3.8 metres wide.

The lintel is carved with 48 squares surrounding a central figure. Each square represents a character in the form of winged effigy. There are 32 effigies with human faces and 16 with condors' heads. All look to the central motif: the figure of a man with his head surrounded by 24 linear rays that may represent rays of the sun.
Some historians and archaeologists believe that the central figure represents the “Sun God”, while others have linked it with the Inca god Viracocha.
(Wikipedia).

Most archieologists appear to date the site to around 300BC to AD 300.
The area around Tiwanaku may have been inhabited as early as 1500 BC.

                        Ponce Monolith.

Such statues perhaps represented the race of stone giants which first populated the world in pan-Andean mythology. Gold pins and traces of piant indicate they were once clothed in textiles and decorated with bright colours. The statue is 3.5 metres tall and dates to c. 300 CE.

The figure holds a kero (qero) or tall beaker in one hand and a staff-like object, perhaps a sceptre or coca snuff tablet, in the other.

Another mega statue.

Kalasasaya, Tiwanaku. This walled compound of sandstone blocks creates a sacred space used for public and religious ceremonies. It measures 130 by 120 metres.   Standing in the precinct is the Ponce Monolith.

It has stone heads protruding from the interior of its sandstone perimeter walls

Pumapunku.
Kantatallita is one of the most destroyed ruins of Tiwanaku, where we see huge blocks of cut stone in great geometric detail.
